Ahead of the meeting of the EU’s Justice and Home affairs Ministers taking place in Brussels today, Manfred Weber MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, urged concrete decisions.
“The investigation into the Paris attacks has outlined some lack of cooperation by intelligence services in the Member States. A national approach alone in the intelligence field is clearly not sufficient. We expect the JHA Council today to agree on a strengthening of the cooperation between national intelligence services and to make it more automatic.
The EPP Group has been pushing for an agreement on an EU PNR since 2011. We strongly hope that the Council’s decisions and the numerous calls from socialist governments for an EU PNR will convince those colleagues who may still be having doubts to finally agree on this much-needed dossier”, Manfred Weber said.
“For the EPP Group, it is also urgent to set up a Central Terrorism Database for the exchange of information about potential jihadists at EU level”, he concluded.
